England's Miss Linwood was well-known for her artistic needlepoint patterns in the early 18th century.

In 1949 the Linwood Recreation Board sponsored a contest to select a queen who would be crowned during the July 4th celebrations. The celebrations included a baby parade down Shore Road to the All Wars Memorial Park and special athletic events at the park for Linwood school children.

The first queen, chosen by members of the teen club known as the Linwood Youth Organization, was called the "Queen of Youth." Over the years the selection process changed along with the title and the date on which the new queen was announced. Some were chosen at an annual event called "High Neighbor Hop." Some were elected by Linwood students at Mainland Regional High School. In recent years the winners were selected by special committees established by the Recreation Board. By 1961 the title had changed to Miss Linwood and the dates changed from July 4th to Memorial Day and later to the Linwood Country Fair in May.

Our website includes Miss Linwood pictures from original photos in our files along with newspaper clippings from the scrapbook. We'd love to have pictures of all the Miss Linwoods. If you have photographs to share, please email us so we can arrange to get copies. In the meantine, enjoy this tribute to our hometown youth.
